British Values

The team and community of St Saviour’s CE Primary are committed to both the local community and faith community.  We respect the multi-faiths of our country. We celebrate a range of festivals as a means of deepening our understanding and knowledge of the world in which we live.

Democracy

  • Election of School Council reps in each class
  • Election of RE Ambassadors in each class
  • The children are able to express their opinions during our annual surveys
  • Discussions during assemblies regarding current politics – Brexit, elections
  • Within the curriculum, children create and lead debates
  • Our School Council visit the Houses of Parliament to learn more about democracy
  • The children have the opportunity to create their own classroom rules

Individual Liberty and Mutual Respect

  • Year 6 Buddies with Reception children – help with playing games and building relationships.
  • Children have various roles and responsibilities across the school such as lunch menu monitors, stair monitors.
  • There are clear rules and expectations that encompass our school ethos.
  • Children are given the freedom to make their own choices through after school clubs, activities and Community Time.
  • Through teaching and learning, children are taught about fairness and equality.
  • Respect between adults and children is lived and guided by our faith, belief and the teaching of Christ.
  • All year groups are taught through RE and reflection times about making choices and being responsible for themselves.
  • During educational visits, children take responsibility to keep themselves safe and help/support each other.
  • Every class takes part in weekly Mass where the children reflect on bible stories and apply the messages of these to their own lives saying ‘A time when I showed love… or kindness was ….’

Rule of Law

  • Each class sets rules and expectations to ensure our excellent behaviour and attitudes are evident in all we do.
  • Assemblies are used to help deepen our understanding of ‘Our Faith’ but also the faiths and beliefs of others. We use the LDBS worship calendar for some assemblies.
  • The school follows a behaviour policy which all staff follow consistently.

Tolerance of those of different Faith and Beliefs

  • Our RE curriculum has a strong focus on children relating examples of Christ’s teaching to their life.
  • Children freely express their feelings and views and any extreme views are challenged. We have a worry box in every classroom and reflection books.
  • We celebrate other faiths and festivals seeking links to our own faith such as World Faiths Day. The celebration of festivals helps us to develop a greater understanding of the world in which we live.
  • Diversity, culture and language are celebrated through International Week, themed books, visits and trips, and are times for both parents and children to teach each other about their cultures and beliefs.
  • Children take part in educational visits to places of worship of other faiths as well as attending church weekly.
  • We have a Charity Committee who help to raise money for various charities throughout the year. Many of these are local such as The Passage and also Comic Relief and Macmillan Cancer Care. All of these involve the staff, children and parents of our community.
